Big Green Tractor

The weather was finally dry enough for my dad to try out the John Deer tractor.  I was asking my dad if I could ride the tractor.  He started out with a couple of lines across the field and then he said I could try!  I was so excited!

My dad gave me instructions on how to drive and he rode with me on the tractor for a couple more lines.

Then I was off by myself! I was pumped.  I think I did a pretty good job, and my brothers even told me I did.  No pets were run over and no soccer goals were collided into.

GOATS!

Today we got GOATS! We have two - the black one is Ann and the caramel one is Natalie. So early in the morning we set out to get the goats at Crispy Cream donuts. I know, a weird place to get goats . After we got them, we went to Wilco to get hay and suplies then we went home and set the goats free.

Garden rocks

One day me and mom decided to make garden markers as an art project.  We went to the beach and got rocks and then we dried them and painted them. After they were dry we wrote on them with a sharpie.

Hoop house

It's been cold, wet winter and spring and we've been waiting to plant plants in our garden but it's been too cold so we decided to make a hoop house to warm up the air around the plants.

We planted peas, broccolini, Swiss chard and kale.

To make the hoop house we went to Home Depot and got PVC pipe, anchors, plastic sheeting.

First, we screwed in the anchor to the side of the raised bed and put the larger PVC tube through it.

Then, we inserted the long, flimsy, thinner PVC pipe into the larger tube.

Next, we folded it over the garden and inserted it into the tube on the other side.

Finally, we spread the plastic sheet over the hoops and attached it with clips to hold it down.

Finished product! Grow, veggies, grow!

Chicken Day!

March 10, 2017 will be forever known in our family as "Chicken Day!"

Why? Four years ago, we started the dream of having chickens.  We even named our potential feathery friends Misty and Dawn.  But after mom checked the HOA regulations, we found out we could not have any fowl on our property.  Bummer!

Fast forward 4 years, and now we have our farm and there are no "fowl" rules here.  So, we started making plans.  Emmy got a book for Christmas on chickens and we made a careful study of the different types.  We determined the best ones for us would be a Rhode Island Red, a Plymouth Rock, a Buff Orpington, a Novogen and 2 Americaunas.  Mom and Emmy made multiple trips to Wilco to scout out supplies, talk to people and visit the brooders.  Emmy carefully marked up the chart provided by Wilco that told us when each type of chicken was coming in.  Wilco imports a batch of chicks every Friday for a few months in the spring.  Based on all the information, we picked March 10th as our starting date.

Emmy counted down the days to "Chicken Day", each day telling mom how excited she was to get chickens.  When Chicken Day finally rolled around, she couldn't wait to get through school to go.  We had to set a departure time, so she would stop asking.

At 1:30, sharp, mom, Emmy and Grammie piled in the car and headed to Wilco.  We fought through the crowds hovering around the tanks of chicks and grabbed the closest sales person.  Emmy knew exactly what she wanted and we had the chicks finally in our possession.

Happy Girl!
Once back at the farm, Emmy introduced each chick to the water and food and placed it gently in the brooder.  Welcome home, chicks!

George was quite interested in the chickens and immediately assumed it was his duty to protect them.
